7 Tips To Keep Your Trees Healthy

Trees are the most valuable possession of our entire community and landscape. Since evolution, they've enhanced our quality of life by contributing to almost everything from necessities to luxuries. Apart from enhancing the landscape’s aesthetics and providing a serene environment, they also play a significant role in cutting down the energy consumption costs. Therefore, this necessitates proper tree maintenance for elongated growth and health. However, there are specific points every tree owner must follow to maintain the thriving and well-being of trees.

Hence, here we have some of the effective tips you should follow to encourage better nourishment and health to your trees:

Plant the right trees

Choosing the right tree for your locality is one of the most crucial and foremost factors you should undertake to ensure years of enjoyment from any tree. While selecting tree seeds, you should never forget to choose species known to adapt to the climatic conditions of your setting. Another essential factor to consider is to pick an appropriate spot offering adequate space, soil, and sunlight to your tree. You can also ensure that the spot is at a distance from your home's power lines or underground utility lines.

Remove the stakes early

Most trees that sway with the wind tend to develop a robust trunk. However, if your new tree cannot stand on its own, you can use a two-stake system with a loose, flexible tie (one on each side of the root ball) to offer ample support to the trunk. Once your tree begins to show sturdiness (hopefully after a year), you can remove the stakes to encourage vigorous growth.

Keep the grass away

The grass growing around your tree competes with the trunk and restrains it from getting the essential nourishments such as air, water, and other nutrients. Therefore, you should not allow grass to grow around your young trees as it can negatively affect and hamper the overall development of your trees. However, to attain the best results, try maintaining a grass-free, mulched area around the trunk.

Water properly

Regular watering is one of the essential elements to boost the healthy growth of trees. While young trees demand watering at constant intervals, other mature trees also call for water during drought periods. Therefore, you should deeply saturate the entire roots of your trees with water to uphold better nourishment. However, always make sure the soil is partially dry before watering again. Some lawn care practices such as deep irrigation and soil basins are better alternatives to keep your trees hydrated.

Fertilize when needed

While young trees may require occasional fertilization, other mature ones may not need to be fed at all. Therefore, you should consult an expert to best understand your tree's requirements and follow the recommended steps. For instance, a tree growing poorly or showing yellowish foliage demands adequate fertilization for better growth.

Mulch and prune properly

Practicing mulch helps cool down the soil while preserving moisture and improving the soil texture. This process also enables weed removal. Hence, to implement mulching, apply 2-3 inches of organic mulch under your tree to see better results. Similarly, pruning lifts the structure and strength of your trees.

Protect the roots

Heavy equipment like cars should not be allowed to drive over the root areas of the trees as they compact the soil while lessening the oxygen levels and destroying the roots. You should also avoid changing grades to avoid harming the roots or making them more susceptible to storms.
